It’s been a good summer for movies. One of the biggest expectations this summer has been a monster mash…no, not the song (it was a graveyard smash!). I mean of course the big budgeted "Pacific Rim" where Voltron. and Mobile Suit Gundum meets Godzilla. A pretty good cast accompanies this movie. If you’re a fan of "Sons of Anarchy", or "It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia", then you’ll recognize and appreciate seeing Charlie Hunnam, Ron Perlman, and Charlie Day.
Is this movie worth your money? In 2D, yeah, I think so. The other factors you need to consider is that this is the first American made giant robot vs monster movie we’ve seen in well…a long time, so go see it for that alone and you’ll be satisfied. Don’t focus so much on the plot or some of the other things that go on in this movie, for instance, why our governments would start building walls to keep out giant monsters that can easily punch through them, or why our military hardware sucks ass at doing damage, or why our F-22 Raptor fighter planes are flying so low and getting within range of the giant monster being able to take a swipe at them, or why we’d build giant robots to beat the ever living shit out of these monsters instead of mounting miniaturized rail guns onto all of our vehicles and staying out of range. Whatever though, I mean it’s giant robots fighting monsters, so who gives a shit? That’s all we really want to see, just like Transformers. Unlike Transformers however, I actually like this movie comparatively when it comes to the story that lies between each monster moment.
A brief synopsis of the film: Inter-dimensional rift opens up, monsters come up and start causing mayhem, our governments come together to build giant robots to kick their asses which require two pilots that are synced up mentally to do, and after a number of years we only have a few robots left to bitch slap them with when we finally come up with a plan to beat them permanently, just like the Death Star battle. Overall score, 3 out of 5 stars. KIRK THE INTERN
